Common Problems

What Goes Wrong in Restaurants Buildings

Walk-In Failures Mid-Service

A failed walk-in on a Friday night puts thousands of dollars of product at risk within hours.

Smoke in the Dining Room

When make-up air fails or is unbalanced, the hood stops capturing and doors slam or stick.

Hot Dining Rooms

Undersized or dirty dining room RTUs cannot keep up with full seating and summer heat.

Two Contractors, No Answers

HVAC blames refrigeration, refrigeration blames HVAC, and the kitchen stays broken.

Toronto Commercial HVAC looks after the whole mechanical side of restaurants across Toronto and the GTA: kitchen make-up air and exhaust interlocks, dining room rooftop units, walk-in coolers and freezers, reach-ins, prep tables and bar refrigeration. We serve full-service restaurants, QSR, cafes, bakeries, bars, banquet halls and catering kitchens, more than 220 restaurants a year.

Restaurants are hard on equipment. Kitchen hoods pull 3,000 to 10,000 CFM out of the building, so make-up air has to keep pace or the building goes negative. Grease and flour load condenser coils fast. Walk-ins open hundreds of times a day. Dining rooms fill with people and heat at the same time the kitchen is at full output. And when something fails, it fails during service.

Most restaurant operators deal with an HVAC company and a separate refrigeration company, and problems fall between them. One contractor for the whole kitchen removes that gap.

Straight Answers

Restaurants FAQs

Do you handle both HVAC and refrigeration for restaurants?

Yes. That is the main reason restaurant operators call us. We service kitchen make-up air and exhaust interlocks, dining room rooftop units, walk-in coolers and freezers, reach-ins, prep tables and bar refrigeration under one contract. One contractor means one phone call, one schedule, one set of records and no hand-off delays between an HVAC company and a separate refrigeration company. Our 313A refrigeration mechanics and TSSA gas technicians work the same accounts, so a call that starts as a warm walk-in but turns out to be a make-up air pressure problem gets solved on the same visit.

How fast do you respond to restaurant emergencies?

Restaurants get priority routing on our 24-hour line, with a 2-4 hour emergency response across Toronto and the GTA. Walk-in freezer and cooler failures go to the front of the queue.

Do you clean kitchen exhaust hoods and ducts?

No. Grease duct and hood cleaning is a specialty trade. We service make-up air, exhaust fan motors and interlocks, and coordinate with your hood cleaning company.

Why does our dining room get hot on busy nights?

Full seating, cooking heat and kitchen exhaust pulling conditioned air out all add load. Dirty coils, slipping belts, stuck economizers or an undersized RTU make it worse. We check the RTU and the make-up air balance together.

Can you help with a new restaurant opening?

Yes. We check HVAC, make-up air and refrigeration before opening, document interlocks and temperatures, and support the opening inspection.

Do you work with restaurant groups and franchises?

Yes. Multi-site MSAs with per-site billing, quarterly PM and one point of contact. Our largest covers 45 downtown sites.

When do you schedule maintenance?

Before opening, between lunch and dinner service, or on closed days, so we stay out of the line.

What does restaurant HVAC maintenance cost?

Single-site visits are $185. Multi-site programs are quoted per site with monthly cost allocation.

Can you keep records for our health inspections?

Yes. Every refrigeration visit includes a written temperature log, and HVAC visits include service records.

Do you serve QSR and cafes as well as full-service restaurants?

Yes. QSR stores, cafes, bakeries, bars, banquet halls and catering kitchens.
